How Often Should You Replace Your Eyeglasses? Can You Wear the Same Pair for 10 Years?

There is no date stamped on a pair of glasses. People ask whether they must replace them every year or whether one pair can last a decade. The answer depends on your eyes and the condition of the pair, not the calendar.

Replace your glasses when...

  • Your prescription has changed. This is the main reason. Only an eye test can tell you.
  • The lenses are scratched or worn. Scratches cause glare and blur, and they cannot be polished out. See can scratched lenses be repaired?
  • The coating has worn. Anti-reflective and blue cut coatings do not last forever.
  • The frame is bent, loose or cracked. A frame out of line changes where the lens sits in front of your eye. See repair versus replacement.
  • They no longer fit. Faces and habits change.

How often should you get your eyes tested?

Many adults are advised a test every year or two, and children, teenagers and people whose vision is changing may need one more often. See how often you should get your eyes tested.

Can the same pair last 10 years?

It can only work if three things are true at once: your power has not changed, the lenses are still clear and the frame still fits. For many people one of them changes sooner. Children change fastest, and many people notice their near vision shift in their 40s. So the safe approach is to test, not guess.

Signs your glasses may be out of date

  • Blurry vision with your glasses on
  • Eye strain, headaches or tired eyes by evening
  • Squinting, or holding things closer or further than before
  • Glare at night, or a hazy look from scratches

See 5 warning signs you need an eye test.

New frame, new lenses, or both?

If only your power changed and the frame is sound, new lenses may be enough. If the frame is tired or damaged, you may want both. Read frame replacement versus lens replacement.

Looking after a pair so it lasts

Clean with water and mild soap, keep them in a case, and never leave them in a hot car. See how to clean and maintain your spectacles.

Frequently Asked Questions

01How often should I replace my eyeglasses?

There is no set interval. Replace them when an eye test shows your power has changed, the lenses are scratched or worn, or the frame is loose, bent or no longer comfortable. Many adults check every one to two years.

02Can I wear the same glasses for 10 years?

Only if your prescription has stayed the same, the lenses are still clear and the frame still fits. That is uncommon, so have your eyes tested rather than assuming. Children and people in their 40s and later often see changes sooner.

03Do glasses expire?

Glasses do not have an expiry date, but lens coatings wear, lenses scratch and frames loosen, so a pair does not stay at its best forever.

04How do I know my glasses are too old?

Signs include blurry vision, eye strain, headaches, squinting, deep scratches, a worn coating that glares, and a frame that slips or is bent. Any of these is a reason to get an eye test.

05Should I replace the frame or the lenses?

If the prescription changed and the frame is still sound and fits, new lenses in the same frame may be enough. If the frame is damaged or tired, you may want both. See our guide on frame replacement versus lens replacement.
