Face shape calculator: measure by hand

Use a soft tape or a ruler and a mirror. Any unit works (cm or mm), as long as all four are the same. Steps are in the guide below.

Private by design. The face-reading model runs in your browser, and your photo or camera image is never sent to us or anyone else. The camera switches off as soon as you have a result.

The four face shapes

Stylists describe faces by their proportions. The dashed lines in each drawing are the three widths that tell the shapes apart: forehead, cheekbones and jaw.

Oval face

Face is a little longer than it is wide, with a jaw that curves gently in from the cheekbones.

Frames commonly suggested

  • Square: Straight edges add definition to a face made of soft curves.
  • Aviator: A teardrop lens keeps the balance of the face without covering it.
  • Rimless oval: A light, near-invisible frame that leaves the natural outline as it is.

Square face

Forehead, cheekbones and jaw are close to the same width, with a strong, angular jaw.

Frames commonly suggested

  • Oval: Rounded lenses with no corners sit against the angles of the jaw.
  • Rimless oval: No heavy outline, so nothing competes with the line of the jaw.
  • Aviator: The teardrop curve tapers away from the cheekbones instead of echoing the corners.

Rectangle face

Face is noticeably longer than it is wide, with a straight cheek line and a fairly even forehead and jaw.

Frames commonly suggested

  • Square: A tall, wide lens breaks up the length of the face.
  • Aviator: A large teardrop lens adds width at the cheekbones.
  • Wayfarer: A thick front with some depth gives the middle of the face more presence.

Pear face

Jaw is the widest part of the face, with a narrower forehead above it.

Frames commonly suggested

  • Aviator: The lens is widest at the top and narrows below, the opposite of the face.
  • Clubmaster: A heavy browline adds width across the forehead.
  • Cat-eye: Upswept corners lift the eye line toward the temples.

How to calculate your face shape

Stand in front of a mirror with your hair pulled back, and measure with a soft tape or a ruler. Any unit works, as long as you use the same one for all four. Then enter them in the calculator above.

  1. Face length. From the middle of your hairline to the bottom of your chin.
  2. Cheekbone width. Across the widest part of your cheekbones, just below the outer corners of your eyes.
  3. Jaw width. Between the two corners of your jaw, just below your ears.
  4. Forehead width. Between your temples, at the widest part of your forehead.

How the numbers decide

Pear
Jaw is 5% or more wider than the forehead.
Rectangle
Length is 1.5x the cheekbone width or more, and the jaw is at least 85% of it.
Square
Length is under 1.35x the cheekbone width, and the jaw is at least 85% of it.
Oval
Everything else: a jaw that tapers in, or a length in between.

These are the usual by-hand rules, a rough guide rather than a precise measurement.

Common questions

Is this face shape finder really free?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and asks for no email or phone number. You can use the camera, upload a photo or enter four measurements by hand.
How does the face shape calculator work?
It compares four measurements of your face: length from hairline to chin, and the width across your cheekbones, jaw and forehead. The ratios between them decide the shape. The camera version takes the same proportions from facial landmarks, and the by-hand calculator uses the rules printed in the guide on this page.
Is my photo uploaded or saved?
No. The face-reading model is downloaded to your browser and runs on your own device. Your camera image or photo is never sent to us or to anyone else, and the camera switches off as soon as you have a result.
How accurate is the face shape finder?
It estimates your shape from the proportions of your face. It is a guide, not a stylist's verdict, and it tells you when two shapes are close. If the result looks wrong to you, pick your shape by hand or use the calculator.
Do I have to take my glasses off?
Yes, you get a better reading without them. Pull your hair back off your forehead, look straight at the camera in even light and keep your chin level.
What if I have a round face?
The finder has four shapes: oval, square, rectangle and pear. A round face, short with a soft jaw, is placed with the nearest of them, usually oval. If that does not feel right, pick the shape you think fits.
Does face shape decide which glasses I should wear?
No. The suggestions follow a common styling idea, contrast the angles of your face with the shape of the frame, but it is guidance rather than a rule. Fit, comfort and what you like wearing matter more.
Face shape kaise nikaalein?
Do tareeke hain. Upar free face shape finder mein camera chalayein ya photo daalein, aapki photo kahin upload nahi hoti. Ya phir face length, cheekbone, jaw aur forehead ki chaudai naap kar calculator mein daalein. Poora tareeka is page par Hindi mein diya hai.
