Glasses are a snapshot of your eyes on the day of your test. Eyes change, and so do lenses as they wear. If any of these sound familiar, it may be time for a fresh check. This is general guidance, not a diagnosis. Only an eye doctor or optometrist can tell you what is going on.
1. Headaches, especially in the evening
Frequent headaches around the forehead or temples after reading, screen work or driving can happen when your eyes are working harder than they should to focus. Many causes exist, but an out-of-date prescription is one worth ruling out.
2. Squinting or holding things closer or farther
If you narrow your eyes to read signs, push your phone farther away, or bring a book closer, your vision may have shifted. Squinting is the eyes' own way of improvising a sharper image.
3. Dry, tired or burning eyes
Constant fatigue or dryness can come from long screen hours (see digital eye strain), but it can also signal that your lenses are no longer right for the way you use your eyes.
4. Halos or glare at night
If headlights seem to smear or ring while driving at night, it might be a prescription change, a worn coating, or a medical cause. Don't assume it's just the roads. Get it checked, and avoid night driving until you have.
5. Scratched lenses or a worn coating
Scratches and a cloudy anti-reflective coating scatter light and reduce clarity. Your eyes may then strain to compensate without you noticing. Scratches can't be polished out (read what can and can't be repaired), but fresh lenses fix it.
See a doctor promptly if…
- You notice a sudden change or loss of vision, a curtain or shadow over part of your sight.
- You see new flashes of light or a sudden shower of floaters.
- An eye is painful and red, or you have double vision that is new.
These need urgent medical attention, not a new pair of glasses.
How often should you test?
A comprehensive check about once a year is a sensible habit if you wear glasses, and more often if your doctor advises, as with children, diabetes, or a changing prescription. Our guide by age has the details. An annual exam also checks eye health, not just the lens power.
