A scratch across your lens is annoying, and the internet is full of home fixes. Most of them make things worse. Here is the honest answer on what can and can't be repaired.
Can a scratched lens be repaired?
In practice, no. Modern lenses carry thin coatings (hard coat, anti-reflective, and so on) on top of the lens material. A scratch usually cuts through these layers, and there's no safe way to put them back. Polishing removes the very coating that protects the lens. Light scratches at the edge may not bother you, but a scratch in your line of sight is a reason to replace the lens, which also restores clarity and glare protection.
Home "fixes" to avoid
- Toothpaste and baking soda. They are abrasive, so they add fine scratches and strip the anti-reflective coating.
- Wiping on your shirt or a dry tissue. Dust acts like sandpaper. Rinse first.
- Hot water or hair dryers. Heat makes coatings craze into a web of tiny cracks. Don't leave glasses on a car dashboard for the same reason.
- Household cleaners, alcohol or acetone. They can damage coatings and some frames.
- Using the lens as a screwdriver or bending the frame by hand. This misaligns the lenses.
The right way: rinse with lukewarm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Our cleaning guide has the steps.
What can be fixed
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Glasses sit crooked or slide down | Frame realignment and temple adjustment |
| Painful or marked nose | Nose pad replacement or re-positioning |
| Loose or wobbly temples | Tightening or replacing the temple screw |
| Lens pops out or feels loose | Re-seating or re-fitting the lens |
| Deeply scratched or crazed lenses | New lenses, fitted into your existing frame if it is in good condition |
Simple adjustments are quick jobs. Anything involving new lenses takes longer, and we'll tell you how long before you commit.
Replacing the lenses but keeping your frame
If you love your frame, there's often no need to buy a new one. Bring the glasses and a current prescription, and we'll check whether the frame is sound and suitable for new lenses. If your prescription is old, it's a good moment for a fresh eye test.
