Reading glasses come with a number, like +1.50. Many people do not know what it means or how to pick one. Here it is in simple words.
What the number means
The number is the lens power, measured in diopters. The plus sign (+) means the lens helps your eyes focus up close. A bigger number is a stronger lens, so +2.00 is stronger than +1.00.
Powers go up in small steps, usually 0.25 or 0.50, like +1.00, +1.25, +1.50, +1.75, +2.00.
Is a stronger lens better?
No. The right power is the one that suits your eyes. Too strong makes text blurry and tires your eyes, just like too weak.
Ready-made vs prescription reading glasses
| Ready-made readers | Prescription reading glasses |
| Power | Same in both lenses | Made for each eye |
| Astigmatism (CYL) | Not corrected | Can be included |
| Eye distance (PD) | Fixed | Set to you |
| Best for | Quick, occasional use | Daily use, or eyes that differ |
Our guide to prescription vs ready-made reading glasses goes deeper. If you also have astigmatism, see what CYL means. To find your PD, see how to measure PD at home.
Where ADD comes in
On a prescription slip, the near power may be written as ADD. It is the extra plus power for close work. Our prescription guide explains it. Progressive and bifocal lenses use ADD too. See progressive vs bifocal.
Please do not pick by age
Age charts are a rough guess. Two people of the same age can need very different powers, and the two eyes of one person can differ. Reading glasses are also not meant for children. An eye test gives the right numbers.
