Frame Colour Different From the Photo? How to Check Before You Order, and What to Do If It Arrives Different

Quick answer: Frame colours often look different from product photos because of screen settings, studio lighting and matte or glossy finishes. Before ordering, check the colour name against your order confirmation. If the wrong colour arrives, compare it with your order in daylight, take photos and contact the shop straight away with your order number.

You order a pink frame. A box arrives with a frame that looks beige, peachy or "nude". It is the same model, but it is not the colour you had in mind. Colour mismatches are one of the most common disappointments when buying glasses online, and they are usually avoidable if you know why they happen. This guide explains the causes, how to check a colour before you pay, and what to do if the pair that arrives looks different from what you ordered.

Why frame colours look different on screen and in real life

  • Screens are not calibrated alike. The same photo looks warmer or cooler on different phones. Brightness and night mode change it again.
  • Lighting in the product photo. Studio lights are bright and even. At home, under a yellow bulb or in daylight, the same frame reads differently.
  • Translucent acetate and layered colours. Many frames are made of layers or have see-through finishes, so the colour you see changes with the light behind it and the skin tone next to it.
  • Matte versus glossy. A matte finish looks softer and paler than a gloss version of the same colour.
  • Colour names are a marketing choice. "Blush", "rose", "nude", "peach" and "pink" can all describe shades that sit very close together.

A quick guide to common frame colour names

  • Pink / rose: a clearly pink tone, from pastel to deeper rose.
  • Nude / blush / peach: a soft, skin-toned shade that can lean pink, beige or peach depending on the light.
  • Tortoise / demi: a brown and amber mottled pattern.
  • Crystal / transparent: clear or lightly tinted, so what you see depends on what is behind it.
  • Gunmetal / matte black: dark grey metal and a flat black, which can look alike in photos.

If a listing uses a name you do not recognise, treat it as an open question. Do not assume it means the shade you picture.

Check these before you order

  1. Read the colour name on the product page, in the variant selector and in your order confirmation. These should all match. Some frames are sold in several close shades as separate options, so double-check which one you selected.
  2. Look at every photo, not just the first. Photos on a face and in different light tell you more than a single studio shot.
  3. View the photo on more than one screen, or at least on full brightness with night mode off.
  4. Ask a person, not a chatbot. If the colour matters, ask the shop to describe it in plain words and confirm which of two similar shades it is.
  5. Try it if you can. If you are in Aligarh, see the frame in the store, or use a home frame trial to compare shades in your own light. See home frame trial versus buying online.

It also helps to know your size before you commit to a colour. See our frame size guide and our guide to choosing a frame shape for your face.

If the frame arrives in a different colour

  1. Compare it with your order confirmation, not your memory. Check the colour name you ordered against the name on the order.
  2. Look at it in daylight, next to the product photo on the same screen. Many "wrong colour" cases are really lighting. Some are genuine mistakes.
  3. Take clear photos of the frame in daylight, the packaging and the label or box.
  4. Do not alter or heavily wear the pair while the question is open.
  5. Contact the shop promptly with your order number and the photos, and say plainly what you ordered and what arrived. The sooner you raise it, the easier it is to investigate.
  6. Ask what happens next. Exchange, refund and replacement are different outcomes, and which applies depends on the case. Ask what the process is and how long it will take, and ask for it in writing.

If your prescription lenses have already been fitted to the frame, mention that straight away, because it affects what can be exchanged. For a wider checklist of what to confirm at the order stage, see what to check before approving a spectacle order. If the problem is the lenses, not the colour, see what to do if your spectacles are made incorrectly.

A fair question to ask any shop

Before you buy, ask: "If this colour looks different in person, what are my options?" A clear answer, given before you pay, tells you a lot about how the shop will treat you afterwards. Our guide to choosing the right optical shop has more questions worth asking.

Not sure about a colour? Ask before you order.

Tell us which frame and colour you are considering and we will answer your questions about it. If you are in Aligarh, you can see frames in person at the store or try them at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

01Why does my frame look different from the photo on the website?

Screen settings, the lighting used in the product photo, translucent or layered acetate, and matte versus glossy finishes all change how a colour appears. Seeing the frame in your own light, in a shop or on a home trial, is the most reliable check.

02Are nude, blush and pink the same colour?

Not necessarily. They are often close shades, and the name is a marketing choice. A nude frame is usually a soft skin tone that can look pink, beige or peach depending on the light, so confirm which shade you are ordering.

03What should I do if the frame colour is not what I ordered?

Compare it with the colour name on your order confirmation, look at it in daylight next to the product photo, take clear photos, and contact the shop promptly with your order number. Ask what the process is, because exchange, refund and replacement are different outcomes that depend on the case.

04Can I see a frame in person before I buy?

In Aligarh, yes. You can visit the shop on Ramghat Road or book a home frame trial, where we bring 10 to 15 frames to your home for ₹100.

05Chashme ka colour photo se alag aaya, ab kya karein?

Pehle order confirmation mein likha colour name check karein, phir frame ko daylight mein dekhein aur photos le lein. Uske baad order number ke saath shop se jaldi sampark karein aur poochein ki exchange, refund ya replacement mein se kaun sa process lagega.

06Can I exchange glasses if I do not like the colour?

Whether an exchange is possible depends on the case, including whether lenses have already been fitted. Ask what your options are before you order and get the answer in writing.

07What is a nude frame colour?

Nude usually means a soft, skin-toned shade that can look pink, beige or peach depending on the light. Because names like nude, blush and peach overlap, confirm the exact shade before you order.

08How do I choose a frame colour that suits me?

Hold or try the frame next to your face in daylight and look at it from a distance as well as up close. Seeing it on you is more reliable than judging from a photo, which is why a shop visit or home trial helps.
