Choosing a frame doesn't need a stylist. One rule gets you most of the way: pick a frame that contrasts with your face shape. Angles soften curves and curves soften angles. Comfort and fit then decide between the finalists.

Step 1: find your face shape

Look in the mirror (or at a front-facing selfie) with your hair pushed back. Notice the widest part of your face and your jawline:

  • Round: forehead, cheeks and jaw are about equally wide, with soft curves.
  • Oval: longer than wide, with a gently rounded jaw.
  • Square: strong, straight jawline and a wide forehead.
  • Heart: wider forehead, narrowing to a smaller chin.

Step 2: match the frame

OvalMost shapes work. Try cat-eye or a bold wayfarerBalanced proportions give you the widest choice, so go by personal style.
HeartOval, round, rimless, frames heavier at the bottomAdds weight near the narrower chin to balance a wide forehead.

Step 3: check the fit, not just the look

  • Width: the frame should be about as wide as your face at the temples. If the frame pushes against your cheeks, it's too wide, and if it leaves clear gaps either side, it's too narrow. Our frame size guide explains the numbers printed inside the temple.
  • Nose bridge: the bridge should rest comfortably without pinching or sliding. Adjustable nose pads help a lot on metal frames.
  • Eyebrows and proportion: the top of the frame should follow your brow line without hiding it, and your eyes should sit near the centre of each lens.
  • Colour: darker frames make a bolder statement, while lighter or transparent ones are subtler. Warm skin tones often suit tortoise, brown and gold, and cooler tones often suit black, blue and silver.
