Best Reading Glasses for Men and Women: How to Choose Frames, Power and Lenses

Reading glasses look simple, and that is why they are easy to buy badly. A rack pair that "feels fine" for ten seconds can leave you tired after ten minutes. This guide covers how to choose the best reading glasses for men and women: the prescription, the lens, the frame and the checks that separate a good pair from a cheap one.

What reading glasses are

Reading glasses add focusing power for close work, such as a book, a phone or a menu. On a prescription, that extra power is the ADD value. If the ADD is new to you, our prescription slip guide reads one line by line.

Two points are easy to miss. Reading power can differ between your eyes, and it changes over time. That is why a tested, made-to-order pair usually serves you better than a ready-made one with the same power in both lenses.

Step 1: get a current prescription

If your last test was long ago, get your eyes checked first. We cannot tell you what power you need, and neither can a website. An optometrist can, and we offer in-store eye testing in Aligarh. For signs it is time, see 5 warning signs you need an eye test.

Step 2: choose the lens type

  • Single vision (reading only): one power for near work. You take them off to look up.
  • Progressive or bifocal: distance and near in one pair, so you do not swap glasses. It costs more and needs some adjusting to. See progressive lenses vs bifocals.
  • Coatings: anti-reflective coating cuts glare from lamps and screens, and a blue cut lens filters part of the light from screens. What blue light glasses can and cannot do is worth reading first.

Step 3: choose a frame you can wear for hours

Reading glasses sit on your nose for long stretches, so weight and fit matter more than on a pair you wear briefly.

  • Weight: a lighter frame leaves less mark on your nose. See TR90 vs acetate vs metal for how each feels.
  • Size: check the lens-bridge-temple numbers against a pair you already like (frame size guide).
  • Lens height: reading needs you to look down through the lens, so a very shallow frame can feel limiting.
  • Adjustability: nose pads and temples that can be adjusted keep the pair comfortable as you use it.

For men

Square, rectangular and double-bridge frames in black, navy, grey and gunmetal are the common choices, and they read as work-ready without looking like "reading glasses". Browse reading glasses for men.

For women

Cat-eye, soft rectangle and rounded frames in clear, tortoise, pink and lilac tones are popular, and a lighter frame keeps the look from feeling heavy. Browse reading glasses for women. Not sure which shape suits you? Our face shape guide helps.

Stylish reading glasses that do not look dated

Pick the frame you would pick for everyday glasses. The only difference is the lens. A frame you like is a frame you will actually wear, and that is the real measure of "best".

Reading sunglasses

If you read outdoors or by a window, tinted prescription lenses can be fitted to suitable sunglasses frames. Browse our sunglasses, or ask us whether a frame can take your reading prescription with a tint.

A quality checklist

  1. The lenses are made to your prescription, not picked off a rack.
  2. The frame's size and material are listed on its page.
  3. The lens and coating are named, with a price, not "premium" with no detail.
  4. The shop will check and adjust the pair, and tell you what to do if it is wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

01What makes a good pair of reading glasses?

Lenses made to your own prescription, a frame that fits your face and stays comfortable for long reading, a lens finish you can see clearly through, and a shop you can go back to if something is wrong.

02Do I need a prescription for reading glasses?

For made-to-order reading lenses we need your ADD value from a prescription. If you do not have one, an optometrist can test you. We cannot work out your reading power for you.

03Are the reading glasses the same for men and women?

The lenses are made the same way. What differs is the range of frame styles. EYVRO has men's, women's and unisex reading glasses frames, and you can browse them by gender.

04Can I get reading sunglasses?

Tinted prescription lenses can be fitted to suitable sunglasses frames, including for near vision. Message us with your prescription and the frame you like, and we will confirm whether it can take your lens.

05Which is better, single vision or progressive reading lenses?

Single vision has one power for near work, and is simpler and cheaper. A progressive moves between distance and near in one lens, so you do not swap glasses, but it takes time to adjust to. Your optometrist can advise which fits how you live.
