Everyone wants good glasses for less, and the word cheap hides a trap. Cheap on the price tag is not the same as cheap in the end. If the lenses are wrong, scratch in a month or the pair does not fit, you pay again. Here is how to pay less and still get a pair that works.
Why one pair of glasses has two prices
Glasses are a frame plus lenses, and shops often show them separately. A low frame price tells you nothing about the lens you will be asked to add. Our guide to what prescription glasses cost breaks the total down.
Where the savings really come from
- A simpler frame. Plain acetate, TR90 or thin metal frames usually cost less than statement shapes. See how to choose the right optical shop and our note on frame materials.
- The lens you need, not the longest list. A hard coat lens is ₹250 and a blue cut lens is ₹350 at EYVRO. A premium anti-reflective lens such as Crizal is ₹1,800. Pick up the premium option when it earns its place, for example heavy night driving or long screen days. See how to choose lenses for your prescription and budget.
- One good pair, kept well. Cleaning and storing glasses properly makes them last. A pair that survives two years costs less per day than a cheaper one replaced every six months.
- Repair before you replace. A loose hinge or worn nose pad is usually a small job. See repair versus replacement.
What never to cut to save money
- The eye test. A wrong or old prescription is the most expensive mistake there is.
- The correct frame size. A frame that does not fit slips, pinches and sits wrongly in front of your eyes. See our frame size guide.
- A way to fix a mistake. Know what happens if the power is wrong or the pair arrives damaged. See what spectacle warranties cover.
Is buying online cheaper than buying in a shop?
Sometimes, but it is not a rule. An online shop can have lower running costs. A local shop can match a price, fit the frame on your face and adjust it afterwards. The only fair comparison is the total for the same frame and the same lens, including delivery. We explain how in how to compare optical shop discounts without getting confused, and what an online order can and cannot do in home trial versus buying online without trying.
A simple way to compare any two shops
- Pick one frame and one lens type.
- Ask each shop for the full price with your power, coating and delivery.
- Ask what happens if the power or fit is wrong.
- Choose the one that is clear on all three, not only the one with the lowest first number.
