"Warranty" is one of those words that sounds more reassuring than it is. A warranty is only as useful as its terms, and those vary a lot between shops and products. Before you buy, it is worth knowing what a warranty typically does and does not cover, and what to ask.

What a warranty usually covers

When a shop or manufacturer offers one, it normally covers defects in how the product was made, for a stated period. For spectacles, that might relate to the frame's joints or finish, or to a defect in the lens or coating. Each of those depends on the exact terms.

What a warranty usually does not cover

  • Accidental damage, such as a frame sat on or dropped
  • Scratches from normal wear
  • Loss or theft
  • Damage from heat or chemicals, for example a dashboard
  • Damage caused by repairs or adjustments made elsewhere
  • Changes in your eyesight over time

This list is typical, not universal. Always check the actual terms.

Warranty, repair, remake and refund are different things

  • Warranty: coverage for defects, under stated conditions.
  • Repair: fixing something, usually for a charge unless covered.
  • Remake: making the glasses again where there was an error in how they were made.
  • Refund or replacement: decided under the shop's own terms, often case by case.

Be wary of anyone who treats these as the same. See what to do if your spectacles are made incorrectly.

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. Is there a warranty on the frame, the lenses, the coating, or all three?
  2. How long does it last, and when does it start?
  3. What exactly does it cover, and what does it exclude?
  4. What do I need to bring or show to make a claim?
  5. Does repair work have its own coverage?
  6. Is any of this written down on the bill or in a document I can keep?

Keep the paperwork

Keep your bill and any warranty document. A warranty you cannot prove is hard to use.
