Parents often ask: "My child studies a lot and complains of tired eyes. Should we buy reading glasses?" The honest answer is: get an eye test first. Here is why, and what can help.
Why reading glasses are usually not the answer for young students
Reading glasses have a plus power. They help people whose near focus has weakened. That is mostly an adult change. A student with sore eyes or headaches may have something else, like short sight, long sight, astigmatism or simply too long without a break. The wrong power can make it worse, so a test is the safe first step. For children, please see an eye doctor. See our children's eyewear guide.
What "study spectacles" can mean
It is not a medical term. Depending on the test, it might be:
- A normal prescription pair for distance or for everything, if the student needs correction.
- A blue cut pair for long hours on a laptop, tablet or phone. See computer glasses with power vs without.
- A pair with a reading power, only if the test shows it is needed.
Signs it is time for an eye test
- Squinting at the board or the screen
- Holding a book very close
- Headaches after study
- Rubbing eyes often, or losing the place while reading

Habits that help any student
- 20-20-20. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Good light. Light the page without glare. Do not study in the dark with a bright screen.
- Right distance. A book or screen about an arm's length away is more comfortable.
- Screen breaks. Take a short walk between long online classes.
- Sleep and water. Tired bodies make tired eyes.
Frames that can take school life
