A child's glasses have a bigger job than an adult's. They correct vision while a child is still learning to see, and they must survive playgrounds, school bags and being dropped. Here is how to choose a pair that fits, lasts and actually gets worn.
Your child's prescription should always come from an eye doctor. Children's eyes are still developing, so don't guess or reuse an old pair.
Why adult frames shrunk down don't work
- The nose bridge isn't developed yet. Children have a low, small bridge, so adult-style bridges slide down or sit crooked. Kids' frames use a different bridge and often silicone nose pads.
- Heads are smaller and still growing. A frame has to fit now, with a little room to spare.
- Kids are active. Frames need to flex rather than snap.
What to look for
- Flexible materials. TR90 and similar flexible plastics spring back when twisted. See our material comparison.
- Silicone nose pads that grip without pinching, so the glasses don't slip during play.
- Spring hinges that let the arms flex outward without breaking.
- Polycarbonate lenses. They are far more impact-resistant than standard plastic lenses and are commonly recommended for children. They are also lighter.
- A snug but comfortable fit. Check the frame size numbers. Eyes should sit near the centre of the lenses, and the arms should reach the ears without pressing.
- An adjustable strap or cord for very young children or sports.
Helping your child wear them
- Let them choose the colour. A child who picked it is far more likely to wear it.
- Make it a routine. Glasses go on in the morning and into the case at night, always in the same place.
- Be positive. Point out what they can now see, and let teachers know so classmates aren't a problem.
- Keep a case in the school bag and teach two-handed on and off.
- Check the fit every few months. Kids outgrow frames, and a loose pair is a pair they stop wearing.
When to re-test
Children's prescriptions can change quickly, so follow your doctor's schedule, usually every six to twelve months. If your child squints, sits very close to screens, rubs their eyes or complains of headaches, book a check sooner.
Ask us about kids' sizes
Not every frame suits a small face. Send us your child's age and prescription on WhatsApp, or bring them in so we can fit and adjust the pair on them. You can also browse eyeglasses and ask which sizes work.
