Hours at a laptop or phone leave many people with tired, dry eyes and a headache by evening. Blue-cut lenses are everywhere as the answer. Here is a straight look at what they do, what they don't, and what actually helps.

What is digital eye strain?

Often called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), it is a group of symptoms from long screen use: tired or burning eyes, dryness, blurred vision, headaches and neck or shoulder strain. The main causes are intense concentration (we blink far less when reading screens), a screen too close or at the wrong height, glare, and an uncorrected prescription.

Anti-reflective (AR) coating vs blue-cut

Do blue-cut lenses work? Honestly, the evidence that they reduce digital eye strain is limited, and eye-care bodies don't consider blue light from screens a proven cause of eye damage. Some people do feel more comfortable with them, and they are often combined with an AR coating anyway. Think of a blue filter as a comfort extra, not a cure. The habits below tend to matter more.

What actually helps

  • The 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds.
  • Blink on purpose and use lubricating drops if your doctor suggests them.
  • Position the screen about an arm's length away, with the top at or just below eye level.
  • Cut glare: avoid a bright window behind or in front of the screen, and match screen brightness to the room.
  • Get the right prescription. An uncorrected or outdated one is a common hidden cause. See how often to test your eyes.

When are zero-power computer glasses useful?

If you see perfectly well and just want comfort on screens, zero-power computer glasses with an AR coating (and a blue filter, if you like it) are a reasonable low-cost choice. If you do wear a prescription, don't add a second pair. Get the coating on your own prescription lenses. Over 40, a lens built for the computer distance can help more than blue-cut alone, which is what an intermediate zone in a progressive or an office lens does.

Our options for students and office workers

We can pair a frame with either zero-power or prescription blue-cut lenses. See current lens options and prices on our lens page, or ask us on WhatsApp and we'll suggest a sensible combination for your study or work hours. If symptoms are persistent, see an eye doctor to rule out other causes.
