The numbers printed inside a frame look like a code. They are not, and once you can read them, choosing a size gets much easier. Our frame size guide covers the basics. This guide goes further on bridge size, temple length and how the three numbers fit together.
The three numbers
| Number | Example | What it measures |
| Lens width | 52 | The width of one lens at its widest, in mm |
| Bridge width | 18 | The gap between the lenses, over your nose, in mm |
| Temple length | 140 | The arm, from the hinge to the tip behind your ear, in mm |
How they add up
For a 52-18-140 frame, two lenses of 52mm plus an 18mm bridge give 122mm. That is the minimum width of the front of the frame. The real front is a few millimetres wider because of the rims and hinges, so use it for comparing frames, not as an exact measure.
Real examples
These are the sizes of the Tom Hardy frames on EYVRO, to show how much the numbers vary:
Two frames with the same 52mm lens can still fit differently. A 16mm bridge sits closer to your nose than a 19mm one, and a 145mm temple is longer than a 140mm one.
What bridge goes with a 50mm lens?
There is no formula, and that question comes up a lot for round sunglasses. The bridge depends on the frame's design and on your nose. Round 50mm frames are made with a range of bridge widths. The reliable method is to check the bridge on a pair that fits you now.
Bridge height and position
How high or low the frame sits on your nose also matters. A frame that sits low can touch your cheeks. One that sits high can press against your brow. Frames with adjustable nose pads let an optician fine-tune this, while many acetate frames have a fixed bridge, so the fit is set when you choose it.
Frame size for men
Size follows face width, not gender. Many adult frames for men fall in the low-to-mid 50s for lens width, but brands differ, and a narrower face may suit smaller numbers. Do not choose by the label alone:
- Take a pair that fits you well and note the three numbers inside the temple.
- On a product page, look for frames within about 1 to 2mm of them.
- Check the bridge first. It decides how the frame sits.
- Allow for the temple. It is the easiest to adjust.
