If a frame is described as "TR90", it is worth knowing what that means. This is a plain explanation of the material, where it is good, where it is not and how to look after it. For a wider comparison, see TR90 vs acetate vs metal.
What TR90 is
TR90 is a nylon-based thermoplastic used to make eyeglass frames. A thermoplastic can be moulded when heated and keeps its shape when it cools. TR90 is known for being very light and flexible, which is why it is widely used for sports frames, children's frames and everyday glasses.
Where TR90 is good
- Light: comfortable for all-day wear and less likely to leave a mark on your nose.
- Flexible: it springs back when bent, rather than snapping.
- Heat and sweat: generally tolerates both well.
- Skin: usually comfortable for sensitive skin.
- Range of colours: available in many.
Where it falls short
- Less adjustable than metal, which has pads and bendable arms.
- Less colour depth than layered acetate.
- Can be affected by solvents and strong heat, so avoid leaving it on a car dashboard.
Who it suits
- Children: see our children's eyewear guide.
- Active people: sport and travel.
- Anyone who sits on their glasses, or carries them loose in a bag.
- Long wearers: light frames are easier over a long day.
How to look after TR90 glasses
- Use a case. See glasses cases and accessories.
- Clean with lukewarm water and a microfibre cloth (how to clean glasses without scratching).
- Avoid solvents, hot cars and hairspray.
- Use both hands to take them off.

Frame material versus fit
A well-fitted frame in any material beats a badly fitted one in the "best" material. Check the size (frame size guide), try the frame on, and ask what happens if it breaks (repair versus replacement). Browse eyeglasses.
