Picking a frame is easier when you know your face shape. It gives you a place to start, so you do not have to try every frame on the wall. This guide explains the four shapes in simple words, the frames commonly suggested for each, and how men and women can find frames listed for them.
Step 1: Find your face shape
Use our free face shape finder. You can use your camera, upload a photo, or enter four measurements you take with a tape. It runs in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded. Before you start, choose Men or Women, so the frames you see at the end are listed for you.
No camera? Measure these four, all in the same unit:
- Face length: middle of the hairline to the bottom of the chin.
- Cheekbone width: the widest part, just below the outer corners of the eyes.
- Jaw width: between the corners of the jaw, just below the ears.
- Forehead width: between the temples.
Step 2: The idea behind every suggestion
Use the frame to balance your face. If your face has sharp angles, a curved frame softens it. If your face is made of curves, a frame with straight edges adds definition. That is all it is. See frame shapes explained for what each shape looks like.
The four face shapes and the frames to look at first
Oval face
Face is a little longer than it is wide, with a jaw that curves gently in from the cheekbones. Balanced proportions. Stylists usually call this the most flexible shape for frames.
- Square: Straight edges add definition to a face made of soft curves.
- Aviator: A teardrop lens keeps the balance of the face without covering it.
- Rimless oval: A light, near-invisible frame that leaves the natural outline as it is.
Square face
Forehead, cheekbones and jaw are close to the same width, with a strong, angular jaw. A defined jaw and a broad forehead. Curved frames are the usual way to soften the angles.
- Oval: Rounded lenses with no corners sit against the angles of the jaw.
- Rimless oval: No heavy outline, so nothing competes with the line of the jaw.
- Aviator: The teardrop curve tapers away from the cheekbones instead of echoing the corners.
Rectangle face
Face is noticeably longer than it is wide, with a straight cheek line and a fairly even forehead and jaw. A long face with straight sides. Deeper frames that add width are the usual suggestion.
- Square: A tall, wide lens breaks up the length of the face.
- Aviator: A large teardrop lens adds width at the cheekbones.
- Wayfarer: A thick front with some depth gives the middle of the face more presence.
Pear face
Jaw is the widest part of the face, with a narrower forehead above it. A wider jaw under a narrower forehead. Frames with weight at the top are the usual suggestion.
- Aviator: The lens is widest at the top and narrows below, the opposite of the face.
- Clubmaster: A heavy browline adds width across the forehead.
- Cat-eye: Upswept corners lift the eye line toward the temples.
Have a round face? The finder has four shapes, so a round face is usually placed with the nearest one, often oval. If that does not feel right, pick the shape you think fits.
Men and women: frames listed for you
The advice above is the same for everyone. What changes is the range you choose from. Frames are listed for men, for women, or as unisex.
- Choose Men in the finder and you see frames listed for men, plus unisex frames.
- Choose Women and you see frames listed for women, plus unisex frames.
It is a shortcut, not a fence. If a frame from the other list fits you well and you like it, nothing stops you. You can also browse eyeglasses, sunglasses, and reading glasses for men and for women.
Step 3: Check the fit, not only the shape
Two frames of the same shape can fit very differently. Look at the size numbers inside the temple, like 52-18-145, and compare them with a pair that fits you. Our frame size guide explains them. The frame material also changes the weight and feel.
