How to Compare Optical Shop Discounts Without Getting Confused

Optical shops advertise offers in many forms: a percentage off, a free second pair, a free eye test, a fixed package price. They are hard to compare because each describes a different thing. The way through is to ignore the headline and work out one number: what you will actually pay for the pair you actually want.

Common types of offer

  • "X% off". Off what? The frame only, the lenses only, or the total? A large percentage off one part may be a small amount of money overall.
  • "Buy one, get one". Check whether the second pair is the same quality, which lenses are included, and whether the first pair's price has been raised.
  • Package or "combo" prices. Check exactly which frames and lenses are included, and what upgrading costs.
  • "Free" extras. Free eye test, free case, free fitting. Check what you give up elsewhere, and whether they depend on buying a certain product.
  • "Starting from" prices. The lowest figure in a range. It may apply to a frame you do not want.

Premium frames, clearer days.

A method that works every time

  1. Decide what you want first: the frame, the lens type, the coatings. See how to choose lenses.
  2. Ask each shop for the total for that exact pair, itemised: frame, lenses, coatings, extras.
  3. Apply the discount to that total and write down the final price.
  4. Compare like for like. Same lens material, same coating, same prescription.
  5. Add what is not included, such as delivery, fitting, or the cost of a later repair.

Questions to ask about any offer

  • Does it apply to the frame I actually want?
  • Does it apply to lenses and coatings, or only to the frame?
  • Can it be combined with other offers?
  • Does it end on a date?
  • Is anything excluded?
  • Will the final bill show the discount clearly?

Price is only part of value

A lower price from a shop that does not fit the frame properly, check the prescription or help if there is a problem may cost you more later. Consider what support comes with the price. See how to choose the right optical shop and how much prescription glasses cost.

Ask for the offer in writing

If an offer matters to your decision, ask for the terms to be written on the bill or order. Then check the final bill matches before you pay.
