How to Choose the Right Lenses for Your Prescription and Budget

The lens is the part of your glasses that does the work, yet it is often the part people understand least. Faced with a list of options, it is easy to either overspend or pick something unsuitable. A clear way to decide is to start from your prescription and how you use your glasses, then add features one at a time.

Step 1: Start with the type of vision correction

  • Single vision: one power across the lens, for distance, or for near work such as reading.
  • Bifocal: two powers in separate zones, with a visible dividing line.
  • Progressive: a gradual change in power across the lens, without a visible line. See progressive lenses versus bifocals.

Which of these you need comes from your prescription and your eye-care professional's advice.

Step 2: Think about lens thickness and material

Higher powers produce thicker lenses. Thinner, higher-index materials can reduce thickness and weight for stronger prescriptions. Whether it is worth it depends on your power and frame. See high-index lenses.

Step 3: Choose coatings by what you actually need

  • Anti-reflective: reduces reflections, which many people notice when driving at night or in photos.
  • Scratch-resistant: helps the lens resist everyday marks. No lens is scratch-proof.
  • Blue-light filtering: see what to know before buying.
  • Photochromic or tinted: darkening or coloured lenses for outdoor use.

Our lens comparison goes through these with prices.

Step 4: Match it to your daily use

  • Long hours at a screen
  • Night driving
  • Outdoor work
  • Reading mostly
  • A child's pair that will be knocked around

The more clearly you can describe how you use your glasses, the easier it is for an optician to suggest options without selling you things you will not use.

Step 5: Set a budget and ask for the total

Ask what the pair costs with the basic lens, then what each upgrade adds. Expensive does not always mean better for you. See how much prescription glasses cost.

Questions to ask

  1. What is the practical difference between these two options for my prescription?
  2. Which of these features would I notice in daily use?
  3. Can this lens be fitted into the frame I like?
  4. What is the total, with and without each add-on?

This article is general information, not medical advice. For persistent symptoms or any sudden change in your vision, see an eye-care professional.
