Single Vision vs Bifocal vs Progressive Lenses: Which Is Right, and What About Screen Work?

"Single focal", "bifocal", "progressive": the words sound similar, and the differences matter once you spend your day at a screen. This guide explains each lens, the types of bifocal and which suits computer and office work. Our progressive lenses vs bifocals guide covers cost and adaptation.

Single vision (single focal)

One power across the whole lens, for one distance: far, or near. It is the simplest and the least expensive. If you only need help with distance or only with reading, this is usually what you get.

Bifocal

Two powers in one lens, with a visible line: distance above, reading below. Types:

  • Round segment: a small round reading area.
  • Flat-top (D-segment): a D-shaped reading area with a flat top edge.
  • Executive: the reading area runs the full width of the lens, so it is the widest of the three.

There is no zone between far and near, which is the gap that makes screens awkward.

Progressive

A smooth change from distance, through intermediate, to near, with no line. The intermediate zone is what makes it suit screens. It takes a few days to adapt to, and it costs more.

What about a computer or office?

A screen sits at intermediate distance, roughly an arm's length. So:

  • Single vision set for screen distance: a good option if you do not need distance and near at the same time.
  • Progressive: covers distance, screen and reading in one pair.
  • Office or occupational lenses: some lens brands make lenses designed for near and intermediate work. Ask us what is available for your prescription.
  • Plain bifocal: has no screen zone, which is why people find it awkward at a monitor.

"DSE glasses" is the UK term for glasses made for screen work. The same ideas apply.

What to ask before you order

  1. What distances do I need to cover each day?
  2. How far is my screen from my eyes?
  3. Which lens design, and what does it cost?
  4. Will you measure fitting height and PD? See how to read your prescription.

Progressive and bifocal lenses have their own prices on the lens prices page, and what prescription glasses cost shows how the bill adds up. For reading-only needs, see the best reading glasses guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

01What is the difference between single vision, bifocal and progressive lenses?

Single vision has one power throughout. A bifocal has two powers, usually distance on top and reading at the bottom, separated by a visible line. A progressive blends distance, intermediate and near in one lens with no line.

02Are bifocals or progressives better for computer work?

A standard bifocal has no zone for the intermediate distance of a screen, so people often find it awkward. A progressive has an intermediate zone, and some lenses are made specially for office or screen work. Ask us what is available for your prescription.

03What is an executive bifocal?

It is a bifocal where the reading area runs the full width of the lens, with a line across it, so the reading zone is wide. A flat-top (D-segment) bifocal has a smaller reading area shaped like a D. A regular round-segment is smaller still.

04What does DSE mean in glasses?

DSE stands for display screen equipment, a term used in the UK for computer workers. DSE glasses just means glasses made for working at a screen.

05Can I get single vision lenses just for my screen?

Yes. If your distance vision is fine, a single vision lens set for your screen distance is one option. If you need distance and near too, ask about progressive lenses. Your optometrist can advise.
